Virgin birth true, says Archbishop of Canterbury

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has been accused of dismissing the story of the Three Wise Men, and the Star of Bethlehem, as mere legend, while at the same time affirming the doctrine of the Virgin Birth of Jesus. He was interviewed on BBC Radio Five by Simon Mayo, with comedian Ricky Gervais (star of The Office) throwing in a few questions of his own....

It's a pity they didn't say he had claimed that Christmas Cards are untrue, because that is the gist of his comment.

I read the responses in The Times, and was disappointed to see how many respondents hadn't read what Williams said.

On the virgin birth, I doubt that too many people have been converted through that doctrine. When I became a Christian, it certainly didn't enter my head. It was not until later that I even became convinced about the trinity. I just knew that God loved me, that Jesus died for me, and that I needed to repent and believe.

As Juan Carlos Ortiz said, "There is no theology examination to get into heaven." As Christians, do often erect too many barriers to faith. Jesus said he would not quench a burning wick; we see one and hit it with the foam extinguisher!
