Alcohol and drugs killed spirit of Santa

TOMORROW it will be a year since I was honoured by being chosen Young Australian of the Year. In my acceptance speech last January, I said that my award was a stark reminder that I was one of very few young people from my home community in Aboriginal Cape York who have been given a real chance to an education and a choice in how to lead their life. A year ago, I was hoping for change. Since then many good policies, such as welfare reform, have started to be implemented in Cape York, but to tell the truth, not much has changed for children and young people in Kowanyama.
