Family values threatened, says interfaith panel

THE Victorian Government is indulging in social engineering in giving lesbians and single women access to fertility treatment, giving lesbian partners legal recognition as parents and allowing surrogate mothers, the leader of a Jewish, Christian and Muslim committee said yesterday. Rabbi Shimon Cowen said planned changes announced by Attorney-General Rob Hulls before Christmas showed that secularists had hijacked fundamental values and were changing accepted morals. Mr Hulls adopted a number of recommendations by the Victorian Law Reform Commission, including making surrogacy legal for infertile couples and easing restrictions on access to fertility treatment for lesbians and single women. He deferred a decision on allowing single people and gay couples to adopt.

Dr Cowen, son of former governor-general Sir Zelman Cowen, formed an interfaith committee to see if there was a consensus between religions. The group — with Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Pentecostal and Orthodox members — wrote to every state MP at Christmas. Dr Cowen said yesterday the consequences of such changes — due to be made law later this year — would be profound.
