In the past, it was religion that taught us how to grieve and gave us the rituals and language that could create the redemption and resolution that would help us to move on. It taught the patterns of living and dying through the seasons of the year. But as more of us in the community have relinquished faith, we've also given up the rituals and language that go with it. In doing so, we've lost the collective memory that has been passed down from generation to generation about what we need to survive life's most difficult times. Cheryl Lawrie writes.
