HERE'S a resolution for the new year — and this one goes out to all the writers, artists and hucksters who supply the garish world of popular culture with its images and stories. No more serial killers! Please, can we just have one bright year in which serial killers don't feature at all on television, in film or in best-selling novels? Is it not bad enough that these predatory individuals live their crepuscular existences in the real world without a serial killer appearing as the villain in every second cop show or Patricia Cornwell novel? Why is there an entire section in my favourite bookshop devoted to true crime and why are 70% of the titles about pitiless murderers such as Jeffery Dahmer, Ted Bundy and Fred and Rosemary West?
