THE Central Intelligence Agency was yesterday placed under criminal investigation for the destruction of videotapes of the interrogations of two terrorism suspects in secret prisons five years ago. The historic veil of secrecy will be ripped from the spy agency by John Durham, a mafia prosecutor who was a central character in the events that inspired last year's Oscar-winning movie, The Departed. United States Attorney-General Michael Mukasey took the rare step of publicly announcing the criminal probe yesterday, a month after the CIA admitted that it ignored legal advice and destroyed the tapes in 2005.
