On January 1, 1978 I was chairman of the newly formed Northern Land Council as a number of major changes were taking place in Aboriginal affairs. The most important of these was the introduction of a Land Rights Act in the Northern Territory, but many other changes took place as the nation moved from a policy of assimilation of Aboriginal people to that of self-determination.
