
The Vatican thinks it has bagged the elephant with conversion to Catholicism of the former British prime minister Tony Blair on the eve of Christmas. Blair certainly believes it is a monumental event, implying that, along with the 19th-century Anglican bishop John Henry Newman, he is the church's biggest catch. Perhaps he should study the catechism, and the clause that exhorts the faithful to be humble in all things. But Blair's messianic complex in likening himself to an intellectual giant such as Newman is the least troubling aspect of his conversion. More contentious is the hypocrisy of the church in accepting him. Andrew West writes.
