The Australian acknowledges that modern families come in many different configurations. Like many religious groups, we believe the interests of children are paramount and that a married couple, man and woman, is an ideal family template. But we recognise there is no guarantee this will be preferable to the alternatives in every case. Above all, a safe and nurturing environment is the requisite foundation for a good childhood. In our view, groups such as lesbians should be free to make their own decisions about whether or not to have children. But IVF is an expensive medical procedure that should only attract a public subsidy when used out of necessity, not choice. In the absence of a medical condition making IVF necessary for conception, over and above the obvious limitations of a two-woman couple, hopeful parents of all types should be willing to foot the bill.
