Jenny Macklin, the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, maintains that the Rudd Labor Government is taking a "middle road" on the proposed "national apology to the stolen generations and their families". Writing in the Herald Sun last Tuesday she declared there would be an apology but that there would be no financial compensation. Without doubt, Macklin is well-intentioned. However, it is far from evident that a middle way - between those Australians who maintain there is no need for an apology and those who believe an apology without compensation is meaningless - will work, writes Gerard Henderson.
