KEVIN Rudd will dramatically strengthen the powers of the nation's consumer watchdog to prosecute big businesses that slash their prices to ruin smaller rivals. Opening another front in the Government's assault on the price of consumer goods, the Prime Minister will legislate for jail terms of up to five years for business people who collude with competitors to control prices. Labor confirmed its plans yesterday, with sources saying the attack on predatory pricing and other anti-competitive behaviour would augment the Government's plans to monitor grocery prices, act against profiteering by fuel companies and promote greater housing affordability.
